Lunch at a Winery in the Douro Valley

Wine tasting lunch is a new popular option at Douro Valley quintas

In the Douro Valley, it has become quite common to enjoy lunch served at a vineyard, often with a tasting of local wines. This offers a lovely chance to relax during your meal, savor local wines, and explore new pairings. Plus, it’s a great way to make the most of your time in the valley, often including a guided winery tour. The settings for these lunches are usually stunning, with picturesque views of vineyards.

When it comes to dining at Douro Valley wineries, options vary.  Some have full-service restaurants, offering a meal with a view, while others offer set menus of traditional Portuguese dishes paired with their wines. For those seeking a deeper experience, some wineries offer lunch with a winemaker, like Duas Árvores, or even a wine tasting course with a sommelier during the meal, as seen at Quinta da Nápoles.

Keep in mind, these vineyard lunches can often last anywhere from 2 to 5 hours, or longer if you wish to relax and take in the ambiance.

Now, let’s explore the options for vineyard lunches in the Douro Valley.

To round off the meal, desserts are paired with Quinta do Crasto Late Bottled Vintage Port.

For those seeking an even more refined experience, the superior tasting option offers a selection of premium wines. Quinta de Nápoles

Founded in 1756, Quinta de Nápoles is one of the oldest estates in the Douro region.  It presents the ideal conditions for the production of fresh, elegant table wines with extraordinary aromatic complexity. Today, the quinta produces some of the best wines of Niepoort.

I wanted to tell you about the experience known as “This is Not a Restaurant!”.  This is an informal lunch where guests dine alongside the winery team, all seated at the same table.

Dona Maria da Luz, the Quinta’s cook, plans the menu a week in advance, ensuring it changes daily and reflects the season’s offerings. Typically, the meal begins with a traditional Douro soup, followed by a main course and dessert or a delectable cheese platter. Lunch starts promptly at 1 pm, so please arrive on time! Paulinha will welcome you and set a beautifully arranged table for all. During the meal, sommelier Pedro Borges, will guide you through the wines.
