Douro Valley is one of the most beautiful places in Portugal, worth to putting on one’s bucket list.
Breathtaking landscapes, hills covered by terraced vineyards, reflections of clouds and stars in the still river, top-notch wineries, gastronomic restaurants and Portuguese hospitality always make me want to stay longer.
Besides, the wine country is about 2 hours away from Porto and 4 hours from Lisbon. Given the distance from major cities and the beauty of the place, it is definitely worth at least an overnight stay. I recommend staying two-three nights to embrace the beauty of the region and to give yourself time to relax with some of the best views on the planet.
In recent years, wineries (“quintas”) in the Douro Valley have invested in infrastructure and many offer exquisite wine hotels including extravagant options such as in Quinta da Pacheca.
Whether you are looking to stay at a luxury hotel in the Douro Valley or for a cosy family winery stay, here are some of the best accommodation options.
Located near Lamego, Six Senses Douro Valley is set on a hill with views of the terraced vineyards and the river.
The hotel is a renovated 19th-century manor house with contemporary interiors.
Six Senses is all about luxury, spa retreats, wine tastings, wellness and yoga programs, various outdoor activities, and a heated infinity pool.
Six Senses is a good location for wine tours. It is located near several famous wineries around Régua and Lamego, and offers easy access to Pinhão by car.
Imagine staying in a huge wine barrel at one of the most extravagant winery hotels in the Douro Valley?
The bold architectural project of suites in the form of wine barrels set in the middle of the vineyards was recently expanded to add the modern Wine House Hotel.
Experience the outdoor pool with a bar or a spa with an indoor pool.
You are on the grounds of one of the most beautiful wineries in the Douro Valley. During your stay you can tour the winery, taste their wide selection of wines.
Last September, we participated in grape stomping at Quinta da Pacheca, an experience I highly recommend!
See my little video below about Quinta da Pacheca below.
Quinta de São Luiz - The Vine House
I have recently discovered Quinta de São Luiz, a new Douro hotel in Tabuaço worth checking out.
The estate is home to the Kopke Port Wine known from the 17th century.
Today, the quinta offers accommodation at the Vine House, with 11 meticulously designed rooms with amazing views over the Douro River. Six of the rooms have private balconies, overlooking Vinha Rumilã, the oldest vines of Quinta de São Luiz.
The infinity pool with the views of the river is extremely instagrammable!
At the quinta you will also find a restaurant São Luiz by Chef Vitor de Oliveira which is open to guests from other hotels as well.
The quinta also offers tasting experiences, picnics, and harvest activities.
Family-owned quinta which started its history in 1815, Quinta de la Rosa is a winery famed for its premium wines and ports. It is also known for its idyllic hotel and the restaurant with a view. Besides, Cozinha da Clara, Quinta de la Rosa features Tim’s Terrace, a relaxed lunch venue offering gourmet pizzas, burgers and barbeque meats.
The hotel rooms are in secluded casas with mini-gardens on the ground floor.
The quinta is only 15 minutes walk from the town of Pinhão by a relatively flat road along the river.
At Quinta de la Rosa, you can tour their wine production facilities and taste modern style port wines and a variety of white and red wines.
The Vintage House is the top hotel in Pinãao, by the Douro River and steps from the Pinhão train station.
Rooms offer amazing views of the Douro River and are very cozy and comfortable.
The pool was perfect, and the breakfast is tasty and generous.
The hotel is elegant and luxurious. The Vintage House is an excellent way to enjoy Douro landscapes by the day and Douro wines at night in a cozy bar.
One other thing to say is that you will be just by the river and the train station of Pinhão, so there is no need to take a taxi or climb the hills. The hotel is in the walking distance from top wineries in Douro Quinta do Bomfim and Quinta da Roêda.
The gastronomic restaurant Bomfim 1896 by Pedro Lemos is within a 3-minute walk from the hotel.
At Quinta Nova Winery House guests found themselves in luxurious rooms overlooking the vineyards and the river and surrounded by scenic and tranquil countryside.
Quinta Nova is near the Ferrão train station. They will pick you up from the station if you arrive to the Douro Valley by train. The hospitality at Quinta Nova is outstanding.
The estate also has its own heliport and a boat dock, a restaurant, and an outdoor swimming pool.
I also loved the dry wines of Quinta Nova and their unique winemaking museum.
In my opinion, views from here are some of the most beautiful in the Douro Valley.
Quinta do Pego is one of my favorite places to stay in the Douro Valley. Quiet and relaxed house on the banks of Douro river and just of the scenic road N-222.
This property is very well arranged and clean. The breakfast was excellent with a lot of variety and the most breathtaking views.
Quinta do Pego also has an excellent infinity swimming pool with unforgettable views of the Douro river, hills and vineyards.
One word of caution: driving to Quinta do Pego involves a climb up a steep and narrow road. It was quite stressful for me at first, but I got used to it quite quickly.
Quinta da Côrte is a small boutique hotel situated within a winery near Valença do Douro, offering fantastic views, an outdoor pool, and stylish interiors designed by Pierre Yovanovitch.
The winery, along with the 19th-century house purchased by Philippe Austruy, houses eight guest rooms that have been renovated to create modern, cozy spaces with a touch of Douro character.
For those looking for a more private experience, the entire villa can be reserved for your group.
Guests have the opportunity to join a free wine tour and tasting at 5 pm, and the estate also offers activities such as wine workshops, harvest experiences, and grape stomping for its guests.
Various locations around the quinta are available for picnics, lunches, and dinners prepared by from local products by the Quinta’s chef.
Located in Ervedosa do Douro, 15 minutes drive from the Pinhão train station this charming hotel has received the Best in Wine Tourism award.
Here, you will find some of the best views over vineyards and the Douro valley, tasting of excepetional Quinta de Ventozelo wines, a wine bar, a restaurant, and friendly employees.
Elegantly modern, the hotel’s design and furnishings reflect a blend of contemporary luxury and traditional charm.
Another beautiful quinta and hotel in Ervedosa do Douro.
You will stay where wines for famous Churchill’s port are made.
Guests love breathtaking views, stunning vineyards, an infinity pool overlooking the Douro Valley, large rooms, privacy, and delicious breakfast.
Beautiful location in the heart of the vines and spectacular views.
I found this property very cozy and tastefully decorated.
The host is super friendly and will do everything to make sure guests are happy and feel at home.
Quinta de S. Bernardo Farmhouse is a small boutique hotel devoted to wine tourism and a farm-to-table experience.
The building is a former farmhouse that dates from 1912.
Guests love suites overlooking the vineyards, an organic garden, an infinity pool, and the hospitality of the staff.
Casa Relógio Do Sol house used to be a a monastery, then a family house and now it is a modern and cozy place to stay in the heart of the Douro Valley.
There are only five bedrooms. Casa Relogio de Sol is a great place to relax by the pool.
I have not stayed in the casa yet, but I saw the rave reviews and put it on my list for the next trip to Douro.
