I Visited 5 Porto Wine Bars (and here is #1)

The truth is that I have not just visited these wine bars, but I regularly do so as I live in Porto, Portugal and work in the wine industry.

If you visited Portugal, you might have noticed that many local restaurants and bars, would only offer you a selection of tinto or branco (red or white), which is often a good reason to just opt for a bottle of Super Bock (beer from Porto) instead.

However, for those truly keen on exploring the rich and diverse world of Portuguese wines, which has seen a remarkable growth in variety and quality lately, I highly recommend visiting these bars.   See you there!

Which Wine Bar in Porto in 2024?

In the past, I have mentioned some excellent Porto wine bars in the Best Wine Bars in Porto and 6 Porto Wine Bars with a View

Here is my updated list of favourite wine bars in Porto for 2024.  I go there for a glass of excellent wine and some good food.

TIP: Pay close attention to the opening times.  I find they may be quite random here in Porto.

Natural wines at Prova, the best wine bar in Porto
We are tasting natural wines from Douro and Bairrada in Prova

All Porto wine lovers know Prova and their team of professional sommeliers.  Diogo and João are the stars of the show. They know everything about Portuguese wines.

Prova constantly brings new wines from Portuguese producers for their customers to taste.  This bar is dedicated to the art of wine and is the place for a glass of good wine in Porto.

Do not rely solely on their wine list.  Ask staff for suggestions and they would gladly find the right wine for you and have you taste it.

Food choices are a bit limited as there is no kitchen onsite, however their cheese plate features some excellent Portuguese cheeses to accompany your new wine discovery.

Another notable aspect of Prova is its location in Ribeira, near Palacio da Bolsa, which is the heart of the touristic center.

For those seeking a more curated experience, Prova offers private wine tastings, which can be conveniently booked through their website.  This is an excellent opportunity for a deeper dive into the world of Portuguese wines, guided by the expertise of Prova’s passionate team.

Prova is open from 5 pm.  Closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Wine Tasting at Alibi by Yours Porto
Orange wine at ALIBI

I have recently discovered ALIBI when I had dinner at their restaurant with a Portuguese friend.  The food was just outstanding and the service was impeccable.  I recommend noting ALIBI as your possible dinner spot, as well.

Back to the wine bar.  You can always stop for a glass in their bar space facing the rather steep rua das Caldeireros, which is also home to the now very famous Chama restaurant.

ALIBI takes their wine selection very seriously.  The choice is quite wide and carefully curated.  The best Portuguese and European wines can be found here by the glass and, of course, by the bottle.  One of the great things about this bar that you can taste Portuguese sparkling wines by the glass, which is not the case everywhere.  ALIBI also sells wine, and I found the wine “to-go” prices rather attractive.

Finds of this week: the white Titan of Douro and the orange Loureiro from Monçâo paired with ceviche and beef tartar.  Saved for next week: red wine from Mallorca.

ALIBI is conveniently open from noon every day except Sundays and is easily accessible from rua das Flores and everywhere in the historic centre of Porto.

As you walk up rua Santa Catarina, do not stop at the end of its pedestrian part and continue up the street.  An astonishing choice of organic, biodynamic and natural wines awaits you at A Cave Do Bon Vivant owned by Clémence and Victor Wallut, a French couple who moved to Porto five years ago.

They have a great selection of Portuguese, French, Italian, Spanish, Georgian, German and even American wines all of which are “clean”.

There is a nice outdoor terrace at the back.  Enjoy a glass of natural wine with charcuterie, cheese, humus, a small delicious beefstake or a sandwich.

A Cave do Bon Vivant is a good space to learn about new wines and meet new people from all over the world.

Opens at 5 pm every day except Sunday and Monday (comme en France).

Tatiana and Alexey, originally from Russia and former lawyers, brought their deep passion for wine to Porto. In 2023, they opened their new wine bar, renowned for offering some of Porto’s best views. Tucked away in a hidden gem of a location, on the charming Escadas das Verdades behind the Porto Cathedral (Sé do Porto), this charming bar is worth stopping at on your way up or down the stairs.

The wine selection at the bar primarily showcases the wines of Northern Portugal carefully selected by the couple. While Tatiana knows all about these wines, Alexey delights guests by serving a variety of snacks, even Mediterranean dips which to the pleasant surprise pair exceptionally well with the Portuguese wines on offer.

Inside Arco das Verdades

Arco das Verdades offers cozy, familial atmosphere enhanced by soft jazz music, the warmth of a fireplace, and captivating views of the Dom Luis I bridge.

The bar is open from 2 pm to 10 pm from Friday to Tuesday.

For jazz concerts schedule check their Instagram page @arco_das_verdades.

Address: Escadas das Verdades 13, 4050-622 Porto

5. Popina

Wine and tapas in Popina, Porto
Wine and tapas in Popina, Porto

Popina offers good selection of wines by the glass and by the bottle from very good Portuguese winemakers.  Among them, the famous Luis Seabra (see photo above).

Wonderful tapas and good location make Popina a good spot for an informal and tasty meal with good wines.  My English friends loved it so much that they came to Popina 3 times during their 3-day stay in Porto.

My personal favourites are pork cheeks and cod croquetas that come with a bowl of rice dish accompanied by a glass of Alentejo white.

Reservations are highly recommended!
