Can you eat a winery in Bordeaux?

Several Bordeaux wine estates have excellent restaurants.

Usually, wineries partner with great French chefs to bring you the best of local cuisine paired with famous Bordeaux wines and the most exquisite views of Bordeaux vineyards.

Some Bordeaux wineries also offer lunch picnics.

Bordeaux winery restaurants serve lunch from noon to 2 pm.  When planning lunch in Saint-Emilion, allow for at least two hours to enjoy a traditional 3-course French lunch and a glass of Bordeaux.

Are Bordeaux vineyard restaurants open all year around?

Bordeaux vineyard restaurants may be closed in winter months between Christmas and early March.  It is not uncommon for them to close during the month of January.

Also, it is worth noting that Bordeaux wine country restaurants are closed on certain days of the week – for example, on Sundays and Mondays and often on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Which Bordeaux wineries have restaurants?

Here is a list of vineyard restaurants I recommend near Saint-Émilion, the most famous wine region of Bordeaux on the Right Bank.

1. Les Belles Perdrix at Château Troplong Mondot

Les Belles Perdrix is on the beautiful grounds of a Saint-Émilion grand cru classe winery, Château Troplong Mondot.

Les Belles Perdrix was awarded a Michelin star in March of 2022.

The gourmet restaurant offers to experience the modern style cuisine of the Michelin-starred chef, David Charrier with unforgettable views of Saint-Émilion vineyards.

The restaurant sources a lot of its produce from its organic permaculture vegetable garden on the property.

Les Belles Perdrix offers lunch and dinner menus between Tuesday and Saturday.  I recommend booking a table well in advance.  The first lunch reservation is at 12:15 pm.

The restaurant is approximately 10 minutes away from the town of Saint-Émilion which makes it a convenient stop during your wine tours.  There is underground parking onsite.  If you plan on visiting the restaurant do not miss a guided visit and tasting at the gorgeous Château Troplong Mondot (reservations required).

2. La Terrasse Rouge at Chateau La Dominique

La Terrasse Rouge is located at Château La Dominique, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classe, transformed from a small family winery to a state-of-the-art facility redesigned by Jean Nouvel.

The restaurant was created by Nicolas Lascombes, a well-known Bordeaux restaurateur. The menu highlights the traditional gastronomy of Southwest France.

During the warm months, La Terrasse Rouge opens its terrace, the most instagrammable place in Saint-Émilion.

Have a glass of Château La Dominique or one of the other 250 wines on the wine list with your lunch or dinner while looking at the architecture of Château Cheval Blanc.

The service can be somewhat slow during busy times, so I would budget additional time and enjoy a relaxed afternoon.

La Terrasse Rouge is closed during the month of January.

3. L'Atelier de Candale at Château de Candale

L’Atelier de Candale is in the most idyllic location. Set in the vineyards of Saint-Émilion, this restaurant serves modern-style cuisine.

Open every day from May to September except dinners on Mondays and Sundays.

There is nothing better than a chilled glass of Bordeaux rose or white on the terrace of L’Atelier de Candale on a warm summer day.

From October to April, L’Atelier de Candale is open from Tuesday to Saturday.  It is my go-to place during the winter months.

4. Le Jardin at Château Petit Faurie de Soutard

Le Jardin opened at Château Petit Faurie de Soutard in 2021 and has been the favourite of my wine tour guests since then.

Le Jardin restaurant is open from Tuesday to Saturday, noon and evening.

5. Restaurant du Grand Barrail

Photo is courtesy of Hotel du Grand Barrail.

The Château Grand Barrail is a 5-star hotel a couple of kilometers from the town of St. Emilion.  The hotel has an elegant restaurant serving southwestern France cuisine and fine wines.

When the weather is good, you can have lunch or dinner on the terrace with a view of the park and the vineyards.

Picnic at a Winery: Which Bordeaux Chateaux Offer Picnics? https://allwinetours.com/bordeaux-winery-picnic/ Sat, 16 Jan 2021 16:37:23 +0000 https://allwinetours.com/?p=11769

A picnic at a chateau garden overlooking a vineyard is a special experience.  Share a bottle of Bordeaux wine over French picnic foods or a gastronomic creation.

Some Bordeaux chateaux will arrange a picnic for you by contacting a traiteur, a caterer who will arrange your picnic basket.  A glass of local wine is often included and you can always buy a bottle from a winery boutique.

Picnic prices start from 30 euro per person. Typical fare: cheeses, salad, cold meats, a baguette or a sandwich, sweets and fruits.

Normally, picnics at chateaux will be organized between May and September.  Order your picnic at least 1 or 2 days in advance of your visit.

Of course, picnics are the best outside on a good day.  In case of bad weather, picnics are moved inside the chateau, which is usually a nice French room with a view.

So, which Bordeaux wineries offer the exciting picnic option?

I plotted a few interesting wineries on the map.  Click on a pin or a picture to find out more about each estate.

As you go for your wine tours and tastings in La Rioja, take a note of the restaurants to stop for lunch.

Choose among gastronomic restaurants, wine bars with views of vineyards with Sierra de Cantabria mountains as a backdrop, wine and food pairing options at wineries or simple tabernas with excellent hearty riojan food.

Rioja Winery Restaurants

Several wineries have onsite restaurant and catering facilities.  When booking your wine tour, see if any of the wine and food pairing options appeal to you.

These experiences are usually by appointment only.  Often you need to book them at least couple of days before your visit.

Bodegas Vivanco

The restaurant is open for lunch and offers wine and food pairing packages with breathtaking views of vineyards and mountains.  Book in advance with the winery hospitality office.

Bodegas Baigorri

This winery restaurant is offering lunch tasting menu in combination with 4 wines of the Baigorri winery (55-60 euro per person including a guided visit of the bodega).

Tierra at Finca de los Arandinos

Tierra at Finca de los Arandinos serves menus where the estate wines complement local dishes many of which are made of “KM 0” products, purchased from local producers.

Bodegas Marques de Murrieta

The experience includes a guided visit through the vineyards and the 19th century winery, the Ygay Castle, a wine tasting paired with haut-cuisine appetizers or high gastronomy menu prepared by the chef of Marqués de Murrieta.

30 to 60 euros per person.

The restaurant at David Moreno serves seasonal local riojan food.

5 Tapas Bars Not to Miss in Logrono, La Rioja https://allwinetours.com/tapas-bars-logrono/ Sun, 29 Nov 2020 21:41:45 +0000 https://allwinetours.com/?p=7758

Logrono is the capital of La Rioja province of Spain. This relatively small city of only 150,000 inhabitants has a bustling gastronomic scene. It is home to several Michelin-star restaurants.

You will find traditional tapas and pintxos bars everywhere around the city center with Calle Laurel being the epicenter of tapas. Experience traditional tapas bars – get a drink and a pintxo (small something on a piece of bread) at one bar, and crawl to another.

Here are some ideas for you on how to make your tapas experience even more diverse.

Treat yourself to high-quality gastronomic tapas at one of these Logrono restaurants distinguished by the Michelin guide.

Tastavin

Tastavin offers traditional tapas with a modern twist and a good selection of wine by the glass.

This is a larger bar in Logrono, on Calle San Juan, frequented by locals.

My favorite plate there is chipirones in tempura, a kind of small calamari, crispy and delicious.

Umm No Solo Tapas

Not just tapas.

The second UMM establishment in town by chef Alex Garcia.

If you want to see pretty and original tapas and pintxos, this is your place. A good selection of premium local wines will enhance the experience.  Highly recommended!

Tondeluna

Traditional Riojan tapas of the highest quality and sleek modern design.

Croquetas and Russian salad were the best I had.

They also offer a tasting menu to share.

However, it is not only the Michelin-guide restaurants that will make you remember La Rioja tapas forever.

Drop in to one of the very traditional bars focusing on only one type of tapas.

Bar Soriano

Bar Soriano only serves mushrooms stuffed with prawns and seasoned with garlic sauce..

They are made to perfection and go extremely well with a glass of Verdejo.

La Taberna del Laurel

If you have to try patatas bravas only once in Spain, go to the right place.

La Taberna del Laurel specializes in spicy fried potatoes. I recommend them with a glass of Rioja to make your experience 100% authentic.

Enjoy your tapas crawling. For more restaurant choices in Logrono as well as in Rioja wine country, view all Rioja restaurant recommendations.

If you are planning to visit Rioja wineries, pick them in the Rioja wineries catalog or join a Rioja wine tour.

Where to stay in Logrono?

My advice would be to stay near the historic center but not in the busy bars neighbourhood.

In my opinion, residential areas within 5-10 minutes walk from Calle Laurel will be the best choice.

Tips for oganizing lunch in Bordeaux wine country

Lunch in Bordeaux starts at noon.

In France, restaurants are rarely open all day long.  Make sure to arrive to a restaurant not later than 1:30 pm or 2 pm. After that, you may not be served.

Take your time to have a long French-style lunch with a view of vineyards.  Anyways, most wineries will be closed for lunch too.

You may find portions to be quite small.  So the best strategy is to start with some wine and an apetizer (entree), enjoy a main dish (plat) and to not feel guilty about a dessert.

Many gastronomic and Michelin-star restaurants will take you for a full 9-course tasting menu adventure.  In that case, enjoy your meal and give yourself at least 2.5 hours to finish it.

Happy touring and tasting!
