Château Lafon-Rochet is one of the most recognizable estates in Saint-Estèphe, thanks to its bright yellow château and its long-standing status as a Fourth Growth in the 1855 Classification. The property lies on two gravel hilltops close to some of the appellation’s most prestigious vineyards. Its 40-plus hectares are planted mainly to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with soils of gravel and clay that give the wines both structure and depth.
The estate has a long history dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries, but its modern era began in the 1960s when the Tesseron family purchased and completely rebuilt the château and cellars. This major renovation, combined with steady improvements in vineyard management and winemaking, helped lift the quality of the wines significantly. Today, under the direction of the Lorenzetti family and Emmanuel Cruse, Lafon-Rochet continues to evolve with a strong focus on precision, sustainability, and elegance.
The wines of Lafon-Rochet are known for their balance: structured and age-worthy, yet increasingly supple and approachable in their youth. Expect dark fruit, graphite, and earthy notes typical of the northern Médoc, with refinement that comes from careful vineyard work and modern, well-equipped cellars. A visit to the estate is relaxed and well-organized, offering an informative tour and a tasting that clearly reflects the terroir of Saint-Estèphe. It’s an excellent stop for anyone wanting to experience a high-quality, classic Médoc estate that combines history, character, and consistent craftsmanship.
