About

The Mumm family dates back to the 12th century. In 1761, the family launched a business as wine producers and merchants based in Cologne, Germany. In the early 19th century, Peter Arnold Mumm’s three sons, Gottlieb, Jacobus, and Philipp, established a new branch of the company in the Champagne region. In 1852, Georges Hermann Mumm, a son of one of the founders, took the reins of the company, which will be known as G.H.MUMM.

Today, Mumm is part of Martell Mumm Perrier-Jouët, the prestigious cognac and champagne business of Pernod Ricard. Maison Mumm’s own vineyards cover nearly 218 hectares. Pinot Noir is dominating the plantings with a 78% share. Maison Mumm’s vineyards include 160 hectares classified as Grands Crus, and are situated in eight historic villages with the best terroirs: Aÿ, Bouzy, Ambonnay, Verzy, Verzenay, Mailly, Avize, and Cramant.

GH Mumm had the neck of every bottle of his Cuvée Brut decorated with a red silk ribbon inspired by the red sashes of the French honors: the Ordre Royal et Militaire de Saint Louis and the Grand Cordon de la Légion d’Honneur. This red ribbon became the symbol of Maison Mumm.

“Only the best” – has been the motto of Georges Hermann Mumm and the House. The Champagne GH Mumm has become so well known for its premium qualities that royal families across Europe, including those of Austria-Hungary, Belgium, the Netherlands, Prussia, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, were among clients of the House.
