Portugal has 37 Michelin-star restaurants of which 7 are awarded 2 Michelin stars. Most of them are in Lisbon, Algarve and Porto.
So far, there are no Michelin-star restaurants in the Douro Valley. However, there is no shortage of high-end dining options in this breathtakingly beautiful wine region.
The number of finest gastronomic restaurants in the Douro Valley increases every year. In 2022 and 2023, Bomfim 1896 by Pedro Lemos and Seixo by Chef Vasco Coelho opened near Pinhão, both being collaborations between Michelin-star chefs and the wine companies.
Pedro Lemos is known for his restaurant Pedro Lemos, the first Michelin-star restaurant in Porto, and Vasco Coelho gained a star for his work at Euskalduna Studio.
The designee of 2 Michelin-stars and one of Portugal’s most beloved and respected chefs Rui Paula known for Casa da Cha da Boa Nova, is also the man behind DOC, a modern restaurant on the banks of the Douro river along the scenic N222 road.
In additon, in the Douro Valley, you can taste some of the restaurants noted by the Michelin-guide.
Castas e Pratos in Régua is one of them, while Cais da Villa is in Vila Real is another. The latter is a little far from the famous Douro river wineries but definitely worth a stop on your way to the valley or after a long day of wine tastings. The town on Vila Real is conveniently located between Porto and the Douro Valley wine country.
